Genting 2009

Day 01, 28th June 2009, Sunday

Right after arriving in Genting, we headed straight to the Hainanese Chicken Rice Restaurant for lunch. I’ve missed you, my black teh-o!!!

Okay this picture mainly for the amusement of how stick figure is bowled over by his receiving enlightenment.

Decor of the Hotel Resort Genting, the place we stayed at. Ti and Pa shared one bed, while I had one all to myself. Luxurious!!!

The only photo of the three of us.

After that we decided to try out the free WiFi at The Coffee Bean downstairs. Their mobile WiFi sucks. I kept logging out! Also, the cakes weren’t nice at all, and I’m not saying this out of spite. It was a horrid experience.

Day 02, 29th June 2009, Monday

Outside the outdoor theme park. The sad thing is that Ti is too chicken/bored to go for the rides while Pa is too old to attempt them. In his own words, “I’ll walk in there and get carried out,” to which I lol-ed like nobody’s business, unfilial daughter that I am.

Some of the same flowers that I saw last year, except that this time they’re in stages of wilt :(

This stalk had full blooms though!

But the next stalk I saw further uphill was in an even worse condition.

The indoor theme park’s merry-go-round.

They had a Vietnam Culture exhibition. These ladies were making sand paintings. I especially liked the one of the lady in front of the moon. The interesting thing is that both sides were a different picture. Power!

After that we walked a lot and had lunch at Old Town. I was terrified when the prawn mee I’d ordered came in red. It wasn’t as spicy as it looked, but I still couldn’t finish it. Old Town’s WiFi was still the best I’d ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

Day 03, 30th June 2009, Tuesday

Buffet breakfast provided by the hotel in the mornings.

Some snaps of the room before we left. Am especially taken with the toilet because the wardrobe could be accessed both from the corridor and from inside the toilet! Pa thinks it’s stupid but I think that it’s an awesome design!

That’s it for my short trip to the highlands.

Now excuse me while I try to down the ginger tea and pretend that some dust got into my eye as I sob over a burnt throat. After that I shall comfort myself with some manga and then lay down on the bed feeling down and trying to keep the food in my stomach because my flu-induced poor appetite tried to reject what little I could force feed myself in order to take my meds.

I don’t want to be sick anymoreeeee :(

Modesto & Bakerzin

Ade and I had an early dinner at Modesto in Vivocity. At first there was only a family dining there, but soon after at about 6+pm there was a couple, 2 ang mohs, a japanese family, and a family who dined al fresco. Seems like this place is pretty popular with molecules containing children!

I really appreciate the menu having life-sized pictures to gauge the size of the regular and mini pizzas! +1.

The plate was amusing. Cute! Also, the glass of water came with a slice of lemon (sometimes while drinking I wonder if it’s meant to be for washing hands after eating chilli crab…)

The olive oil and vinegar reminded me a lot of my first time eating bread this way at Prego.

We had the Salsiccia e Scar-something. It’s what I can make out from the photo of the menu. The meatballs were not bad, and the thin crispy crust was yummy!

After that we paid cash and after the bill had been sent to the register, realised that we could be entitled to a 10% discount using Mastercard (which Ade has). Ade hurriedly called the waiter over and flashed a card straight from her wallet, asking if we could change our payment mode. Something was wrong with the card she was holding… It was pink and it had a barcode. That was her NRIC la! And she didn’t seem to be holding any other card in front of it. Damn funny!

Apparently Ade always has her credit card at the front of the pocket, but recently she had to change the address at her NRIC card that’s why it was where her credit card was supposed to be.

Ade said that Bakerzin has monthly promotions. June’s promo is New York Cheesecake for 50% off. I usually don’t trust gel-like toppings, because they seem to promise loads of artificial sweetening which leaves me exceptionally thirsty after, but this one seems to be just nice; not too thick a layer while having a tinge of sourness. I was so mesmerised by the gel that I didn’t really notice the cheesecake…

I also found out what kind of things Ade has been saying about me. There was one time KK drove her and his sister over to drop something off at my place. When KK’s sister saw me, she exclaimed how thin I was, to which Ade reassured her that I may look thin but my butt size was 38-40 (and KK’s sister was like, that’s my size!), and both she and Ade bonded over my big butt in disguise.

Thanks a lot Ade, I will always remember this! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Waraku & Nectarie

I know the recent posts have been food-centric, so much so that Herbie had to comment on the trend XDD In all fairness, the only interesting thing happening in my life so far has been food; other times I am drawing naked prepubescent girls for Mumble’s research project… pretty boring eh? LOL

(I may post a few of those concept art later on… the older ones are clothed, but I have to censor out the ‘naughty bits’ in the recent ones or else no hosting site would host them.)

Anyway, I was supposed to meet with Eve and Leaves to celebrate Eve’s birthday last Wednesday, and also because they’d just returned from their grad trips. Leaves brought along two surprise ex-classmates! One is XinY and the other is SJHH (whom I’m more close to than to the former).

We had dinner at Waraku. I fought for my asparagus bacon, and in the end we compromised by ordering the mixed dish that contained it, among others. But what was  really interesting was this platter for two:

ARE YOU SURE IT’S NOT FOR FOUR PEOPLE?!?!?!
Okay maybe it can serve two people if said customers are willing to forfeit other yummy dishes :P

After that we headed down to the pub area (the one with the colorful roofs at Clarke Quay) to try some desserts at Nectarine. The waiter was cute XDDD I didn’t catch the names of the stuff we ordered, because XinY was the one who took charge and I was too bloated to think properly. But I think these 3 were what he recommended.

This one was not bad, very crunchy.

I remember this was nice too.

Didn’t really fancy this strudel, and now that I look at it clearly, that color looks a bit odd for something edible ^^;

For size comparison. A bit the small. I can’t remember if the five of us had to pay $3 or $5 each.

That’s it for now! Next post, Chinatown!

This post was also a long time coming, but basically last Saturday the extended family went to Raku (10 Greenwood Ave) for dinner to celebrate Pa and Gu’s birthdays. The buffet cost $59++ pax. It was a mortifyingly extravagant. I took pictures like crazy then gave up because the food just kept on coming orz

Here are the ones that made an impression:

The magical non-stop refilling of sake from the bottle that Melissa bought. At first I kept surprising myself that I didn’t seem to drink that much judging from the cup, but after realising that the waitress actually had refilled it while I wasn’t paying attention…

Wasabi on the left and century egg on the right. Amazing!

Thick nommable slices of sashimi <3

Chawanmushi, or basically anything with ikura (roe) is an A+ in my book.

Love the pinkish watermelons against the green plates.

The birthday cake made by someone Melissa knew.

I forgot what the drink was… something like Choyu, according to Ti. He liked it muchly, and I thought he was being sissy because it was exceptionally sweet (which I don’t like)

Verdict: try the ala carte. The steep price is just not worth it! I didn’t even have the stomach to sample my favourite items a second time T^T

Marmalade Pantry

Not good… The weather these days is the kind where brains get fried. Am having a heated-brain-induced headache but I’ve been putting off this post for far too long.

Anyway, I met up with Yuunsama after she came back from her Japan trip last Tuesday- she had funky Kit Kats for me! We dined at The Marmalde Pantry at Palais Renaissance. Oh also, for some reason alcohol was going for $6 instead of the usual 2-3 times the price. I think it said something about ladies night everynight, or something to that extent :P

The short glass with the lime was my daiquiri (am a sucker for that name and inevitably always order that despite the taste) and Yuunsama’s marvelous Lychee Bellini. The aftertaste of the bellini is something like beer XDD

Effervescence! Back to the chemistry lab.

For $22, I was seriously disappointed that my Kurobuta Pasta came with a serving for half a person.

Yuunsama’s Crab Linguini was better, and it was really exciting to see steam burst out from inside the mound when she broke it apart. Unfortunately, this dish also cost $22 and personally I think the main meals are a little too pricey for my tastes. What you should go there for are the desserts and alcohol!

These 2 were taken by Yuunsama on the super yummy desserts Marmalade Pantry had to offer. The Brownie in the forground was really good! I liked the crispy outer layer… but then the Banoffi Pie (background) was served next and IT TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY. Both are $12 each.

The Banoffi Pie was reccommended by the waiter when we asked what else was good. It’s banana and apple in the filling and the white thing on top is cream. We were engaging in blissful sin and gushing about the desserts when Yuunsama continued with, “And the banana tastes fresh too.“.

Cue silence and much noms. And then I said, “Eh how can you tell that it’s fresh?“.

It became the running joke throughout the meal; I laughed until my stomach ached XDDDDDDD

Tarty

I’ve just polished off the last of Aunty Serene’s latest baking endeavor. Feel empty and lost.

This was taken in the fridge. They’re larger than above and takes 3 bites to finish off compared to the smaller ones which I simply pop into my mouth in one go. Aunty Serene and I both concur that the smaller ones are nicer :D

When I brought this to Shasha and Ruru right after they were fresh from the kitchen, they thought it was store-bought. Well actually only Ruru thought so because Shasha already knew why I was running late :P

Prelude to the Storm

It is flashing lightning and the grey rain reminds me of those times in primary school… but this afternoon I took some pictures of the period before all these happened, when I was marveling at how one could be scorched to death, blinded by the sun, and yet still fall victim to a cold from rain droplets.

Now everything is grey and out of focus and it’s quite amusing to note that the birds outside my window are flying towards shelter in sine curves.

This was the purple toothpick the otah man stuck in one end of the stick to indicate a non-chilli otah.

I picked up the two sticks I bought from the middle and was like, “ow ow ow ow ow,” before he gently told me to pick them up from the tips. Doh!

Sea Dinner

Pa cooked :DDDDD

Miss Squid.

Salmon and yummy fatty skin.

Brown noodles and Watercress. See the classic difference between the fresh watercress we eat at home versus the yellowed, over boiled one (on the right) that we usually eat in stores.

Passion fruit made my mouth turn inside out, but it was surprisingly nice to eat and the seeds were nice to chew.

Am doomed when school reopens in a little more than 24 hours.

WAWET

Or otherwise known as What Are We Eating Today, Kooling’s FYP project.

Here’s mine:

9.02am – Gobbled up two Ferrero Roches on my way to work.

11.55am - Breadtalk treat at the office.

12.03pm – Tried a pineapple tart that Rozy made.

1.19pm - Ground nuts start the feast at the Soup Restaurant.

1.20pm – Samsui chicken is messy.

1.21pm – This tofu is super delicious!

1.27pm - Finally everything we ordered was on the table.

5.11pm – Got a bit hungry recuperating at home.

5.42pm – Got a bit carried away with the internets.

5.44pm – Another Ferrero Roche to finish my snack off :D

8.10pm – Pizzahut’s garlic bread is different. Mushroom soup leaves lots to be desired.

8.15pm – Prosperity pizza is only nice at the ‘pillows’, so termed by Ade. Otherwise the crust is hard to cut and the toppings are too sweet.

8.16pm - Spicy chicken wings are palatable.

8.16pm – Some prawn? It was too insignificant to remember the taste.

9.42pm – Desserts at half-price after 9pm at Cartel! Brutally and savagely attacking them. The one on the right is heaven.

10.13pm – Puey and Ade being naughty and ridiculously amused at Super Fatty…

Zee tiem!

Lunch

I spent two hours trying to finish the lunch I cooked. In my defence, It was the first time I cooked rice. the thought process when pouring the rice into the rice cooker went somewhat like this:

“Too little, perhaps a little bit more… oh heck there’s so little left in the bag, might as well finish pouring it… huh why never stop…”

After that I realised that rice has the power to expand into what seems like 4 times its size. No wonder Mum had cautioned me to just put in a handful for my lunch.

First round.

The second round.

This is the bowl you put soup in. I also forgot to add salt.

Plus point is, peeling layer by layer of cabbage is extremely therapeutic. They taste yummy, and they last for a few meals. I emphathise with Rapunzel’s mother.
